Teachers are provided with saved SketchUp files for each chapter of the lesson so if students get stuck at a particular spot, they can continue with a fresh, accurate file. Easy enough for a third-grade student, yet a great entry activity for a high school student, students are guided through many of the basic tools and concepts used in all 3D modeling programs. Highly relevant for STEM classes, this tutorial introduces any student into the world of 3D modeling. I provide an introduction to using the browser version, but the bulk of the lesson is demonstrated with the PC/Mac software. The browser version has about 75% of the functions that are available in the PC/Mac version and is sufficient to complete this lesson.

SketchUp is a free 3D modeling program that runs on Windows, Macs and now with the browser version (beta), Chromebooks. If a student gets totally messed up at some point, I have included the original SketchUp files, saved at the end of each chapter, so you can share them as needed. If a student misses a day, they have not missed any instruction.Īs their teacher, what do you do? You do what you do best and that is move about the room and facilitate instruction. If they find another way to do the same thing, that’s even better. If they skip a step or have trouble, they can go back and watch again that portion of the tutorial. This format allows students to start from the beginning and model as they watch. They don’t want to have to figure out written directions (did you ever open up the shrink-wrapped manual?). Students love doing these activities, but they don’t want to have anyone show them via projector for 40 minutes and then set them free. Don't get finished during your lab time?
